November 29, 2008 -ATANG and Coffee

McCafe, Quezon Ave. I groped my pencil and write my accounts of the day inside a coffee shop. I waited for 6 o'clock to strike. By that time I expect my father and the rest of my relatives to text me confirming their location. I sat blindly on my chair with a semi-warm cappuccino smokes entering my nostrils. Intoxicated by the strong scent of dark coffee mixed with steamed milk, i ponder moments of my day.

Earlier that afternoon, i attended Floy Quinto's ATANG at Wilfredo Ma. Guerrero Theater at 2nd floor Palma Hall of UP Diliman. I almost forgot that i have to attend a play by 3 PM. My clock prior to that stroked 230 PM when my memory remembered about my Comm 3's scheduled play. That time i had to send a text message to my father and tito to postpone their pick-up time at 230 PM. So i clasped my bag and rushed towards the dorm like the wind. I almost break my ankle doing it. I prayed with exuberance and sighed to reassure my breathing is strictly okay. I flooded my closet looking for the stupid ticket and went directly downstairs, greeted Ate guard, and flushed a smile.

I consumed by mind with thoughts of being closed by the theater, but i got there just fine. Everything in me looked wrecked, but not to the extent that my i am sweating ugly and convulsing like a heap of wheat leaves. Tireless as hell, i went straight to the booth to verify my ticket and entered the theater with composure of a 'critic', a stupid idea i had while rushing stuff.

I sat 3 rows from the stage beside my classmates, forgive me, i don't recall their names. after fifteen minutes, a ticking bell rang inside the semi-quasi-dark theater. As my clock continue to sail, the tune of clicking bells increased in frequency. I smiled, for it was the first time i experience such pre-theater mode. Perhaps DUP made it. Or is it standard for formal theaters to make a signal sound like that?

A scene from

There were no curtains. The stage design conspired airs from 1940s to 1950s styles. I initially thought that the conglomeration of floral and curve lines deflates the stage. What i mean by deflate is that it conjures a decrease of space and size of other structures. However, the particular stage design (composed by Tuxqs Rutaquio) painted in white, stretched and expands the stage elements. i was astounded when a projected video clip, probably a black and white clip from a custom made ATANG filmography, on the white design. The effect exudes a new technique quiet modern and scenic for photography, film, and stage play. Glorified, i considered it as a breakthrough in modern play. The Projection effect, with the aid of a modern LCD projector, contributed to the scenes when Atang(played by Shamaine Centenero-Buencamino) and Gia Almonte (played by Ayen Munji-Laurel) reminisced Atang's past lives.

A closer look at the stage design!

In my position as a cinephile, i could not criticized a theatrical stage play or roost of actors and they way of delivering the acting part without the prior knowledge of the theater. But i am a bit astounded by the brilliance of Ayen Munji-Laurel's role as Gia Almonte. My eyes drooled tears everytime she sang Kundiman songs, and when she sang the song KITANG DALAWA a tear fell from my eye. I fled the theater mixed with the anxiety of my father's arrival in manila and Atang's wonderful experience.

MIKHAIL RED: Unimaginably Brilliant

Still @ McCafe, Quezon Ave. I did have something to do at McCafe McDonald's below the MRT station. The cafe wasn't that crowded as Starbucks, and i personally like the ambiance and stillness of the place. I watched my cappuccino smoke flew away. I grabbed a copy of PDI dated the same day and browsed through the entertainment section, as always. Honestly, i skip the front page and the news section to decrease stress levels due to unfiltered depressing information from headlines, especially given that at that moment my nerve would likely to break for impatiently waiting at a fastfood store because my father(and the rest of my relatives) were caught in traffic down at Antipolo.

Gnawing the pages, i encounter a great find which brings us to my main topic for this post. located almost near the end pages of the bulky newspaper i settled to read RICA AREVALO's story on MIKHAIL RED, a multi-awarded filmmaker who debuted at the recently concluded 20th GAWAD CCP Awards for Alternative Film and Video. Sitting quietly seemed to be uncomfortable. In addition, without any cyber-gadget on the overnight stuff i brought, i struggled to 'blog' using pen on a considerably academic yellow-pad paper. My hands flicked as i noted important point from the article and surprisingly i, myself, could tell how important this newsbit was not only to my cinephilic interests but also to Philippine Cinema.

Days of FPJ's "Alamat ng Gubat" and "Panday" and the time when Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal reign the cinema stadiums sank in my thoughts. With this initial thoughts, i contrasted it with the present day scenarios when Hollywood's great commercial influence and capitalist projections eat out the cinema's old grandeur and high class. When one speak of Filipino Movies these days, people would think about Resiklo, prank sex comedies, unnecessary romantic comedies, and a bunch of indie films shadowed by piercing stereotypical viewpoints and goverment's censorship. I cannot deny the fact that the glory of Philippine cinema before 'the Enlightenment of 2008' reached the penultimate level of death and decay. I might not recall any important film shown this year other than the victorious PLONING.

It might be presumtious to say that 'the Enlightenment of 2008' is held in the hand of Dante(PLONING) and Mikhail. but i regard them as important catalyst and important figures that would determine future trends in Philippine cinema.

17-year-old Mikhail Red won two first Prizes. One, on Experimental Category with his masterpiece,"The Threshold", and the secondly, on Short Film Category with his film "Kamera". I found trailer videos of the film at his youtube account. I spare you two masterpieces by Mikhail:

"The Threshold" directed by Mikhail Red

The Threshold(2007) shows the dark adventure of two main characters played by Kiko Meily and Simon Nicholar Jr. I am particularly amazed by Red's use of animation to explore poetically the symbolism he wants to portray, in the basis of the trailer. The hood can elucidate a lot of questions to some of you. Questions like, what is the purpose of Red putting hood on an actor? Does he mean death? Or something else? Or injustice?

"Kamera" directed by Mikhail Red

Kamera(2007) narrates the role of camera and it's forming connections to next generation (i.e. lolo and apo). The film constituted shinning actors, Lav Diaz and Patricia Rollon. I believe that the dichotomy of youth and old age collaborates in this film. The symbolism of the camera may connote to further notion about the new forming age of Philippine cinema or world cinema as a whole.

Mikhail Red is a son of another cinema giant, a winner of Palme D'or for short film, Raymond Red. The father figure largely influenced Mikhail in creating film masterpieces. I quote, from RICA AREVALO's article:

"I was not forced into film making by my father. He always kept to himself with his work. However, as a child, i used to watch a lot of films on laser disc with him. i grew up appreciating the language of cinema." - Mikhail.

No wonder how an artist grow as an apprentice beside a master. Raymond Red catalpulted Philippines cinema last 2000 when his short film Anino(2000) in 53rd Cannes International Film Festival. The film reigned in the event with the Palme d'Or for standard-length films, DANCER IN THE DARK(2000) by Lars Von Tier, one of my favorite films belonging to my TOP 20 list due on last day of year, 2008. Anino trailer is shown below:

Anino by Raymond Red.

Peyups.com wrote an article on the early days of Raymond Red. You might want to peek, click here!

Raymond Red's winning stance for his 12 min Anino(2000)

as Palme d'Or for short film on 53rd Cannes Film Fest.

photocredit from his own website.

I quote again from RICA AREVALO's article:

"He is both my greatest ally and fiercest rival. He's always there to challence me. I learn a lot from him during car conversations while we're caught in traffic. He usually doen't attend shoots but he's first to criticized my work." - RAYMOND

"I always tell him that the art of filmmaking is not something that I can teach him. What I can do is point him in the right direction, so that he can teach himself and go on his own journey of self-discovery. The playing field has changed a lot since the early years of the independent and alternative film movement in the ’80s, to which I belong. Ultimately, the true artists will stand out and rise above the rest.” - RAYMOND

I salute Mikhail's glory on CCP grounds, and expect a lot of films from, and who knows he will reign as BEST DIRECTOR in CANNES, VENICE, or OSCARS.

CUL-DE-SAC, again?

CUL-DE-SAC, again?

a commentary

Novemeber 28, 2008

Pinoy Cinema kept bothering me as I ate lunch on a cafeteria yesterday. I could not remember hailing a Pinoy movie or, worst, changing my name into that of one the Pinoy character's.

My class before lunch, which i do not like to name, gave me enough reason to drool over stress and to reconsider my position as writer. I gave a speech, and most of you know that this feat is not my winning stance especially if i had to prepare my discourse for 10 minutes. I included in my speech a very personal experience: writing my characters in my novel.

I spoke in front of 29 people about inner lives(imagine?) and i asked them to be more conscientious. it made me quite a loser. Miss 'POP' gave us a topic: Is i would change my name what would it be? I didn't stutter or faint but i missed a lot points that i have to talk about. I had my last public speech in front of 1200+ people during graduation day.

So much for that screwed speech(and i promise to do well next time) Pinoy cinema kept bothering me. Metro Manila Film Fest 2008 looms ahead and i am not quite sure if it's a good thing to consider Filipino films as rewarding enough to receive the spotlight of my thoughts, hence my blog.

Of course the breakthrough of finding Ploning introduced me to a whole new tolerance level for Pinoy cinema. I am planning to watch it this comming Sunday. Some of my cinephile friends like Carl, surprisingly liked it.

CUL-DE-SAC, overrated!

Friday night. Party time for Roselyn, Bar hopping for Felice, a Trinoma/Twilight get-away for Almira and Louise, or so i thought. I guess my plans for Friday constitute a darkened room, a bag of chips(Mr. Chips), and a friend from next door. Sometimes half of my dorm acquiatances, if i am too kind to lent the small space of my room, would be invited.

Picture this: an audience plus me sitting in front of them viewing the first film. I always get to choose the first film, but sometimes when faced by a large pack of audience people get to make the decision. The first film running, and last night it was MAGNOLIA (1999) directed by paul anderson, and Melbert was the only one available for the three-hour film.

After the film, i called it a night and opened my browser to research film. And i found this:

Polanski's second film, entiled CUL-DE-SAC. Thrilled as a gun, i reconnected by dying thoughts to Pinoy Cinema, and found this:

And this:

The thought of putting two teaser trailers starring the Big Boy is enough to sicken my night and induce a nightmare in my sleep. I mean, what the heck, big boy! What is this notion that you are trying to say? A crossover film from singing to indie film acting isn't gonna do good for you and for the 'Pinoy' cinema. Crossovers are bane to the industry, and it has been polluting the cinema for years. Knock it off, Big boy. To give you an example, everybody should have remembered or watched this:

Okay, that just doesn't do it Big boy. Or better yet, a musical would do you good. But a crossover from singing to indie film doesn't legitimize a singer as an actor, but hey, don't worry, i have a good example of a successful crossover. Remember this:

Jennifer girl here hit to the TOP!

An ample warning for Big Boy.

"Cul-de-sac" seemed to be repeatedly used as title numerous times on different media. This is the second one, for me, the title "CUL-DE-SAC" was used for a film, first by Polanski and the second was that of Big boy's. What the heck! is it a little overrated to use it again?

TRIVIA: CUL-DE-SAC will hit SM cinemas on December 3. That would be a Wednesday. So anyone who wants something different from Twilight(poison), try to watch this film.

Have good day everybody, That's all!

Oh! before i go to Antipolo, this is for BIG BOY:

VOYEUR! VOYEUR!

VOYEUR! VOYEUR!

Auteurs!
Artists!
Movers!
Souls!

In the crevices of the mind,
comes light illuminating
brightly from their eyes.
They see pain.
Burning.
The gaze formed the years!

PLONING-NING!

PLONING-NING!

a commentary

November 25 2008

I just finished my English 10 class. I walked rather exhausted from my hilarious and controversial, almost a riot, English 10 class. In order to clench my strained jaw line, (i forgive ma'am Ginny for making us laugh and laugh until i drop dead on my chair) i eyed on announcements, position posters and advertisements on the tainted bulettin walls of AS. With a quick view of the crowded, 'over-commerialized' wall, i spotted some interesting stuff like the parodied magazine covers of some orgs, or the radio broadcasting contest, i think by another organization based in the College of Mass Communication. I was interrupted by my seatmate, whom i know not by name but by feautures. I still got the comic vibes of our introductory text to the English 10 subject written by Chuck Palahniuk, entitled TESTY FESTY.

TESTY FESTY almost reflects the idea of a nihilism. I praise Chuck Palahniuk for doing it in most graphic, creative way of implicating, almost illustrating, of how a nihilist society would actually look like. Ma'am Ginny considered it as a non-academic piece of writing. I agree but Chuck really is transforming literature. His works illuminates fundamental questions about human beings and recent ideologies on human nature. TESTY FESTY, beneath the almost pornographic exterior, uncovers human nature in it's darkest, most revolting way. Graphic pictures of orgies and unconventional sexual performances creates a luring and ironically, almost repelling , environment to the readers. It also poses debates on ethics and philosophy.

TRIVIA(by maam Ginny): Chuck Palahniuk is freekin' gay. (no offense! =) ) WANT SOME PROOF? CHECK THIS OUT! (CLICK HERE!)

8 REASONS TO WATCH PLONING

Okay, honestly this is my direct opposition to the Twilight, too-girly, movie opening yesterday, November 25, 2008. I can not watch Twilight mainly for the following reasons:

8 REASONS WHY I SHOULD NOT WATCH TWILIGHT!

1.) It's too mainstream.
2.) It's too mushy.
3.) Girls who doesn't have a boyfriend dig it! (a wonderful, striking comment from Bam!)
4.) The trailer failed me.
5.) Commonplace
6.) Bad production.
7.) Definitely not an auteur film.
8.) and most importantly, i don't want my money to be flushed down the toilet for a crappy film.

Peace twilight fans! =)

So i decided to count Ploning as my ultimate movie experience this week. However, just this afternoon the strap on my MEMO bag snapped. I hate that SC fix-while-you-wait stall beside the 'LOAD' station. They surely made a prank on my new bag. Urrggh! For the second time, i have to get it fixed ASAP. I have no thoughts on Philcoa's fixing shop and decided to go for SM North's MR. QUICKIE. i brought my readings in Eng 10, my ES 12 homework and my ChE 132 assignment for tomorrow, thank God. I left it at MR. QUICKIE and of course, went to Starbucks. When i got there it was the only time i knew that my Planner sticker card is almost full. 2 stickers isn't that hard to fill up.

My watch is running late, 7 PM stroked like a bang and i have to run if i have too, just to reach the 730 PM showtime at F.I. Guess what, like you never know, i missed it.

I really, really want to watch Ploning for the following reasons(flyer from KAISA, PANORAMNILA, & UP F.I., reechoed):

(i repeat) 8 REASONS TO WATCH PLONNING

1.) It is a movie about hope, love, forgiveness , and healing. Film critics & non-film buffs alike endear to its universal message.
Okay, i know these are deep themes, and if by any chance it's gonna be like Himala (1982), i would watch it. i thirst for universal themes, and i want a fresh, traditional interpretation of it. It's very rewarding that some directors like

2.) The film has an all star cast feautirng award winning artists such as Judy Ann Santos, Gina Pareno, Tony Mabesa, Joel Torre, and Beth Tamayo.

These actors are really great and they have contirbuted greatly in both mainstream and independent cinema in the Philippines. A power house rooster of actors!

3.) Dante Nico Garcia, the director, is an alumnus of UP. UP always priduces promising directors and he gives his best direction here.

You betcha! He has a blog on his Multiply account, check it out. I think Garcia will surely shine on this movie. I admire faithful directors who goes for the auteur purpose of cinema. An auteur film = really a must see for me!

4.) Ploning is the OFFICIAL PHILIPPINE ENTRY TO THE BEST FOREIGN FILM CATEGORY OF THE 81ST ACADEMY AWARDS. and we have a great chance of clinching that nomination! Watch the movie and spread the word!
I really got goosebumps after reading this detail. What on earth is a Filipino independent film doing in the Oscars? This is such a great news! This site can surely tell you how tight the competition is. Click here!

5.) Ploning was graded "A" by the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB) in the Philippines, the highest grade a movie can here in the Philippines.
I ever thought that CEB gave grades on film. It strikes my interest, oh well.
6.) ADIMISSION is only Php 80 for UP students, Php 100 for Non-UP.
Self explanatory.
7.) Catch not just one, but two (2) special screenings.
Self explanatory.

8.) There will be an Open Mic session at the end of each film screening, as the CAST and CREW will be THERE.

Be famous.

That's all for now!

ETERNITY and A Day: Welcome, O! Greek Cinema

ETERNITY and A Day(1998):
Welcome, O! Greek Cinema
a commentary and a pre-critique

Pardon me, i cannot find a decent clip with English Subtitles, but keep reading!

Comment: I cried on this film. I was torn and humanized. It was a self-discovery, a cinema that is emerging and becoming known. I longed for this kind of films. It explores similar themes to THE WIND WILL CARRY US(1999) and A TASTE OF CHERRY(1997), both Abbas Kiarostami's works, and also to ELEPHANT(2003) by Gus Van Sant. I treasure this one with all might. Greek cinema has finally shown it's contemporary tapestry because i only know Greece by MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING(2002). What Theo Angelopoulus gave us is something superbly fundamental and philosophical. It touches the strands of our beings, it's like a violin bow streaking it's sentiments from our emotional fibers, extracting music and the soul. It is magical to see these films.

United States stayed cold after the film's premiere. a disappointing fact, but a legitimate situation. Eternity and a Day(1998) should not only be released in US alone but to the world cinema. it carries with it universal elements centering in man's struggle on the dichotomies such as Life and Death, Youth and Aged, Happiness and Indifference. The film teaches us to preserve hope, to preserve humanity in each of us, and to strive in believing in mysteries.

No wonder why this film can reach my TOP 20 list for 2008 MOST REMARKABLE FILMS of the YEAR.

RED: End of Everything!

RED: End of Everything!

a commentary

Warning: A Spoiler! the Font color is red to pay tribute to the film. it's an artistic statement that should not hinder the reader to continue reading the post.

The clip above is the last scene and closure of the highly acclaimed Finale of Three Colors: Trilogy (1993-1994), entitled RED. I was thrilled and considerably warmhearted after watching it. I consider it as one of the greatest film that i have ever seen and i have a prospect that it could reach my TOP 20 films for 2008.

Krzysztof Kieslowki pronounced cinematic experience in a fundamental experience, quite different from the minimalist concept prevailing nowadays. It shows the essence of forming bonds and answers basic questions for human beings. The film asks questions which are both philosophically and perceptively intriguing. I can almost hear my heart beating during silent moments, where Valetine(Irene Jacob) and Kern(Jean-Louis Trintignant) paused during a conversation. It humanizes the heart, consumes the soul with introspection of oneself.

As the film continuously linger in my mind, i can't help to think how Kiarostami would compare to Kieslowki. I seem to find a connection between him and Kieslowki in terms of how basic their themes are. Here is Kieslowki featuring essence of brotherhood in his THREE COLORS: RED (1994), and Kiarostami exploring the inescapable truth of human existence in his A TASTE OF CHERRY(1997), both lyrically played on screen and carefully accentuates the audience into a parlance of piercing introspection.

I call them, INTROSPECTIVE FILMS: a brand that suit their purpose for the audience. It so amazing that the lyrical development of the films is so consuming, the audience asked themselves if whether they are legitimate to watch the movies or not. It is such an inescapable fixation, a noteworthy cinematic experience these INTROSPECTIVE FILMS bring us. They are as if messages from the Supreme Universe, exploring the reciprocity of humans as beings.

In a way, these films are transcendental and important to man's exploration of the new found faith. I believe in what the late Pope John Paul II said about the postmodern society in his book CROSSING THE THRESHOLD OF HOPE. He said that, today man has found Faith again though he may never understand it. What does this corollary mean? Is this Faith explored in the language of art in cinema? Does cinema shows the value of such corollary? Does cinema reflects this inherent ideology?

I posted more questions back in my mind about how cinema has evolved from the narrative of the times to the present ventures on the lyrical cinematography. INTROSPECTIVE FILMS are fundamental nowadays. Films nowadays are becoming more and more descriptive of its fundamentals: Existence and being. Some may call it critical realism, but i call it Neo-existentialism. Some may highlight Neo-existentialism as the culmination of a postmodernism epistemology and reflective ontological grounds of existentialism, but i simply put is a the new forming concept of films of this NEW age, not even the Postmodern world can describe. Have we moved on from the Postmodern gaze? Have we transcended from the commodity of the Self, or the intertextuality of meaning, or the depletion of metanarrative? Are we in the Post Postmodern age?

New and newer forms of cinema emerge for the past few years after the turn of the century. 1994, when THREE COLORS: RED was introduced, seemed very far. The influence of Pulp Fiction(1993) reached the level of cliche, though Kiarostamis' THE WIND WILL CARRY US(1999) influence is truly reflected in other notable works by some contemporary 'auteur' like Charles Mingiu.

Cinema captured these changes from the very start.
