A Critical Review

A Critical Review on
Reuse of Effluent Water
Article by Simon Toze

a critical review post

I had this homework that my professor in Environmental Engineering gave me. His instructions was to make a critical review on the attached article paper entitled "Reuse of Effluent Water --- Benefits and Risks" I thought i could share this piece to you and comment if there is something wring about it. I will be passing this paper tomorrow at 8:30 AM. So whatever your comments on it would be for constructive criticisms on my writing, which would help me in further reviews.

Here is the link to the article: http://econpapers.repec.org/scripts/redir.pl?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sciencedirect.com%2Fscience%2Farticle%2FB6T3X-4GXVG73-1%2F2%2Fba058cdb97ac1131c6ba674834a1f0dd;h=repec:eee:agiwat:v:80:y:2006:i:1-3:p:147-159

Here is my review:

A CRITICAL REVIEW ON Reuse of effluent water --- benefits and risks by Simon Toze

Dr. Simon Toze, an expert on behavior of microbiological pathogens on groundwater and biogeochemical changes on managed aquifer recharge , and is now a leading principal research scientist on CSIRO’s Water Use and Reuse research group within the Urban and Industrial Water research program discuses the benefits and risks of reuse of wastewater to agricultural irrigation in his article. Although the research delivers practical and useful information on the benefits and risks of the reuse of effluent water, there are also some incongruous claims on the risk of endocrine disruptors on agricultural yields of farms irrigated with reclaimed water.

The article on Reuse of Effluent water discusses about recent problems on scarcity of water resources. Some places in the world demands more water than any other place due to variability of climate and arid conditions that, in addition to population growth, could result to the depletion of these resources. It is important however to establish a system to maintain this depleting resources. One recommendation to this is the application of advance wastewater treatment to reclaim the effluent from different wastewaters. Simon Toze, in his article, particularly sited the benefits of reusing effluent wastewater for agricultural irrigation. He cited that reuse of effluent streams from wastewater treatment can drew a large volume of reliable and constant supply of water to agricultural crops. It also reduces use of water from the environment. (Toze, 2005)

He also mentions the potential risks of reclaimed wastewater, like toxicity of heavy metals deposited on soils, the presence of contaminants (human and animal pathogens, pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors). He also cited the low socio-economic value of the crops irrigated with water due to public opinion.

However, the point about mentioning the risk of endocrine disruptors as a potential health hazard to agricultural crops consumers cannot conclusively assure that such threat do considerable damage. It is noted that on unrestricted irrigation, where high-quality reclaimed water for irrigation of food crops for human consumption, certain requirements need to be considered in the treatment of wastewater. The chemical quality of irrigation to food crops should follow the agronomic standards which include salinity, sodium absorption, and specific ion toxicity of sodium, chloride, boron, and trace elements like cadmium that can affect sensitive crops. (Viessman et. Al., 2005) The presence of endocrine disruptors in effluent cannot be implied as a potential risk on agricultural crops for human consumption due to its variability of source. He cited from a source that it is commonly contributed by contraceptives pills, pesticides, and industrial chemicals. (Toze, 2005) But, these sources are debatable in terms of its severity to affect indirectly human health. For example, pesticides are used in farming to enhance agricultural yield. If pesticides itself, not including the reclaimed water used for the crops’ irrigation, could cause endocrine disruptors, then consumers of such crops could be terribly suffering from its adverse effects today. Consumers today enjoying pesticide-treated crops like rice and staple are generally not experiencing the adverse endocrine disruptors. It is therefore true that pesticides itself, not even including reclaimed waste water with endocrine disrupting chemicals, cannot cause such adverse effects to human health.

His claim on the risk of endocrine disruptors on agricultural yields of farms irrigated with reclaimed water is debatable and therefore cannot directly be concluded to potentially affect consumers of crops. His implication should be further supported by actual studies on the adverse effects of such endocrine disruptors on humans, not just on animals, to actually provide a conclusion on whether this particular risk is essentially hazardous to human health.

i will be soon posting some fun reviews on the recent movies i've watched for a couple days. So just keep reading.

Ciao!

Yesterday once more

Yesterday once more
A blog about another day of blogging

I know, i know, i push you people to read my blog. I'm sorry but you still have to read it. It is a must to read Adrian's Blog. Why?

1.) Some times you need a diversion from crappy internet sites like google, friendster, multiply. Give those tires overloaded sites a break. Tune in with my site. Not that you get to know me more, but more of appreciating the good morals of making mature decisions in life. (men! that's too deep!)

2.) need some friendly advice from the expert on methodological writing? comment me!

3.) Or you just wanna hang out, just check me out.

So yesterday's post wasn't really what happened during the day. My Tuesday's are way better than that. So here are some photo's that i took from my chemistry laboratory class when we did the experiment on Aliphatic and Aromatic whatsoever.

My goodie groupmate holding tubes. From left
to right, Cindy, Camille, and my lab partner Jana

Joash slicing oranges for extraction. Cool!

Meet Sponge Bob! by our artful groupmate Joash.

The distillation set-up. We improvised the base of the
Erlenmeyer. The orange one is where we extract
the organic substance called limonene. it's actually
interesting...

Another blurred photo of out set-up with
some people.

So tonight i've just finish Kyle XY season 3 and i've been researching about blogging.
So i found this. The Blogger's code of conduct. This is taken from wikipedia (a not so accurate site, well, just to give you the picture)

The Blogger's Code of Conduct is a proposal by Tim O'Reilly for bloggers to enforce civility on their bloggers by being civil themselves and moderating comments on their blog. The code was proposed due to threats made to blogger Kathy Sierra[1]. The idea of the code was first reported by BBC News, who quoted O'Reilly saying, "I do think we need some code of conduct around what is acceptable behaviour, I would hope that it doesn't come through any kind of regulation it would come through self-regulation."[2]

O'Reilly and others came up with a list of seven proposed ideas:

  1. Take responsibility not just for your own words, but for the comments you allow on your blog.
  2. Label your tolerance level for abusive comments.
  3. Consider eliminating anonymous comments.
  4. Ignore the trolls.
  5. Take the conversation offline, and talk directly, or find an intermediary who can do so.
  6. If you know someone who is behaving badly, tell them so.
  7. Don't say anything online that you wouldn't say in person.

In later comments, O'Reilly gave a tacit endorsement of Jon Garfunkel's Comment Management Proposal [3]: "Jon, your post at Comment Management Responsibility: A Proposal is very detailed and thought provoking, as well as way more comprehensive than anything I'd thought so far."

I was astonished by how blogging is taken seriously by serious people. And it is a serious thing. Once you step out of the cocoon and enter cyberspace it is a lot of risk, i know. This is important because web blogging is not just a fun stuff, and this goes with multiply, friendster, youtube and my space accounts. Death threats and pranks can go from mediocre to serious stuff. Each blogger should know this. Every post, every comment is essential and part of the system. So co-bloggers out there, we all should know how to handle this kind of stuff.

Don't give out any personal information including cell phone no, permanent addresses, credit card numbers, ID numbers, passwords. If you don't get this then your nuts or practically dumb and should discontinue blogging immediately.

That's all for now.

Ciao!

Corners of my mind
A blog about some thoughts

In my journey towards the dormitory, i scurried on some of my thoughts. i wanted to go somewhere. Somewhere fine and calm. I wondered, Starbucks again. I'll go there. i have to escape.

Apparently, i need money: one of the moments that i usually hate. Knowing that everything is restricted by money.

it's 1:55 AM. and my roommate, Kuya Glenn is sleep-talking again. Manuel is not around to bother me. I am all alone and i should be sleeping this time. GOd, im such an insomniac. I fear that most of my memories would suddenly start to be cast off from my head because of sleep deprivation. A couple of hour from now, two exam results will be given, one is from my exam last monday in Chemistry 153 and the other would be my exam in GE 1. Hopefully none of these exams would be lower than 60%. If it's not, then i should have no reason not to go to Starbucks. I also have an exam tomorrow on my major Chem Eng'g 32. I still haven't mastered yet the craft of chemical engineering calculations.

I also will be emailing Kuya Rattyyyy the deliverables.

I wondered how my day would go today. I still have to sleep... i need to!

and by saturday i have to buy an orange BiC high lighter to put color when i study. I love studying with an BiC orange and yellow highlighter. They make the readings stand out.

I am still thinking of joining another organization this semester. Manuel invited me to join U.P. RCY. What do you think? i am still gettign text messages from officers telling some stuffs for the application. I am also having trouble on putting the GYM sessions every month now i have a registration fee for the months of July and August.

i need to slim down. it for my health's sake. I am becoming slouchy and slow, though i got a high mark on my rapelling practicals last monday, i still need to focus on staying healthy and robust. by fats are building up.

Do you think i should resort to anorexic activities?

My short and pants are tightening, and i still don't have a motivation on applying for membership at the gym. I still need to think about it.

and i really need to sleep...

Nyt! ya all.

On Alcohols: A head start for the week

On Alcohols: A head start for the week
A blog on organic chemistry and the like

2:50 AM. Thursday morning, and i have just woken up by my cellular phone with 4 pertinent text messages on it.

MESSAGES:

1st Message: "Guys, may deliverables kau sa akin.. I need list of MAGAZINES, WEBSITEs, NEWSPAPERS at NGO na nagcacater sa YOUTH, SCIENCE, VOLUNTEERISM etc.. basta may kinalaman sa P(toot)SC... hehe.. I need the list by FRI.. email to: rattty.(churva)@gmail.com. Thanks :)" Sender: Kuya Rattttty 23715+++++++. Sent: 16-July-2008 11:45:46 PM.
And that time i was snorring and dreaming of my friends being eaten by a wild crocodilean species on th coast of Africa. YEah! It was neurotic of me to think of them that way! this particular message is one of the things that i usually consider as another escape plan --- Kill my cellphone with an ax and pretend not to recieve the message. Though i have written and sent emails on top broadsheets and magazines in metro manila like PDA and PS, becuase i am well aware that these top broadsheets are a waste of time, i still consider the escape plan. Which would intolerably make me an irreponsible member of the organization. But since there could be an effort to endulge on this certain aspects, i am still not quite sure about my whole week being completely perfect.

2nd Message: "Pnta ka b welcome nyt? Ngstart n b?" Sender: Iscel
3rd Message: "Gud pm ad, welcome nyt n 2nyt, pnta k!" Sender: Keith
4th Message: "Molave welcome nyt m2ya 7:30" Sender: RJ

I didn't attend that welcome night in Molave because i am dead by 6:30 PM after arriving from U.P. Sorso(chooot)'s GA. it appeared that my body needs to sleep so i invariably replied: "Sory, may 2 probsets ako due bukas." Another escape. I escape, to sleep, for myself --- would make me a self-conceited ass(toot!) But considering the importance of such things, i am uterly good at my decision to dedicate my time on my health and wellness above fun and exhaustion.

BUDGETING: too much food in mind!

After receiving my weekly budget, a picture of me driking another Frappaucino on Starbucks suddenly popped in my head. Last tuesday, i was having a debate with my shit self about spending the 4XXX.00 pesos for the next 6 days. Yes! That would be a lot. And it happened that all of my options are food choices. i have jsut realized this twelve minutes ago after eating my Growers peanuts like a pig. Imagine that! THis could be the primary reason why i got fat!

SHIT SELF: "Hell no! You consider spending 1XXX.oo for your gym sessions over FOOOOOD! what kind of monster are you?"

SELF: "It just a option. i have to weigh the consequences.... i just need to clear my head. Can you shut up please?"

SHIT SELF: "You are a total neurotic! Did you even think that you get into something like going to the gym and buffing up? Hell no! You're just wasting your time and money for that shit stuff. THis is not a good thing! If that money would be spend of Cake and coffee, you could be saving millions of lives out of POVERTY."

SELF: "How am i suppose to do that?"

SHIT SELF: "Try Starbucks! they have a tie-up with UNICEF!"

SELF: "DUH!"

it all no brianer! trust me! a trash-monolougue like this is overated.

POST DELUSIONS

Chem 153: Monday night is the night! First exam of Chem 153 finished off with a blast. I am so happy that it had just happened. And the grueling and grilling 2-hour sitting on an exam chair has finally ended. Thank God. now i can sleep

Kyle XY First and Seond Season: Gladly after my Chem 153 exam, i watched the last two episodes of Kyle XY season two on my laptop. And yes, i finished the DVD. it was okay! it was hanged like most series i watched. Kyle and Jessie finally had a connection. And jessie jumped of the cliff after knowing that she stole information about ZyZZx on Kyle's mind. Amanda was having some trust issues about kyle. And the Tregger family finally understand the deeper meaning about Kyle or Jessie's existence..

ALCOHOLS:

I woke up becuase i need to finish my Formal Report in Organic Chemistry and my Post lab in Alcohols, Phenols, and Ethers experiment. For my readers, who constatly read my collumns, chemistry is what i am right now. I am taking up two courses in Chemistry: one is Organic Chemistry (Chem 31) and the other is Physical Chemistry (Chem 153---much harder that the former). THis is my semester life. And if want to learn about University Life, it is relevant to understand the basic thing about chemistry: Le Chatelier's Principle (See wikipedia).

Alcohols are weird substances, i tell you. It makes people mad, even when he's not drunk!
