Rating: 4.5/5It's a French film, Claire Denis ode to Yasujiro Ozu's Late Spring (1949). The film has some of the most peculiar minimalist aesthetics I've ever seen: almost plot-less, only driven by the character's ambiguous motivations, close-ups instead of long distance shots, subtle cuts and no fade in, de-focused camera at moments of lightness. It was far from the minimalism of Bresson, closer to Pialat and much darker than Assayas' works. The characters are intelligent almost organic and real, nuanced and bravely portrayed with complexity and ardor for themselves. The film is a masterstroke from France's most influential artistic bent, Claire Denis, who gave us Beau Travail (1999).
