Happy Mother's Day

...for Mama...

Thanks you so much for the love, for the care, for the life!

You have always reminded me: "Don't worry everything will come to pass. Believe in your faith in Him."

I love you mama.

VIVA LA VIDA

Abbas Kiarostami's Trees and Crows

---------------------------
V
IVA LA VIDA

a poem by Adrian Mendizabal

As it stands, half-naked
it burnt the kiln, soar.
Through the alleys, it moves,
Through the grass and trees.

This is the wind.
It is swift, mighty, bold.
Strong and corageous
And, softly, it unfolds
Under the skin.

For this is the skin that
Connects all things, and
In the fullness of the
Moon, breaks the shadows
Lurking in our feets.

For this is the foot that connects
Us, yours and mine, in one
Solitude of time, forever
In motion, up and down,
Step, as it steps beyond borders.

For this is a border, when one
Eye blinks, it shatters
Both the wind and feet of
Our friendship. And it marks
Us wherever we go.

For we went, we travel
In places, we go, we, you and I
Clustered both hands and feet
Towards the sea we go.

For the sea is there.
It is the heavy north sea,
A breaking dawn, the swift,
Moves in a daunting pace.

For there are paces,
Slow and fast, the ode of life
And you smile, peacefully
Your eyes are full of colors.

For there are colors in the
Wind, in the feet and in
The sand rocked by the sea.
And forever, it illuminates
From the sky.

For there is the sky. Infinite.
And the sea,
The foot of our lives,
Together, you and I,
And we remain at peace,
Lifting our voices, exclaiming:
"VIVA LA VIDA!"

FIRST BLOOD: STARBUCKS at the Garden

MRT is the shortest possible route from Cubao to Trinoma. So we took a ride.

Our cards get rejected by the machine. I thought we can never get out of the terminal! Glad we did!

Trinoma.

We went directly to Starbucks at the Garden, showing our desperate need to sit or to make 'tambay' (That seems too coño!) Or my desperate need for a Venti Caramel Macchiato. In any way, we really need a place to hang out while waiting for the not so ubiquitous Loiuse Larren Allianza.

Starbucks is really, really good place to hang out!

Clarke: Tall White Mocha Frappe;
Adrian: Venti Caramel Macchiato
Almira: Tall Chocolate Cream chip Frappe!

Almira's effort to capture me while i capture her.

Ciao! God bless!

LAUREL AVENUE!

AT Laurel Avenue.

It was almost 1:30 in my Lastikman watch, I walked at brisk pace. Walking so tall, reserved but giving, as if i was the only one there who is capable of higher understanding. It’s a typical air of a guy, mysterious, on offense, strict of his composure, and deliberately cordial, i plunge into a lot of people menacing my way towards the jeepney stop.

Blessed me! As soon as i got there, an SM North jeep just landed on my feet. I happily grab a space on that long, straight sit on the left with high expectations of my afternoon. I currently received a text message from my father that he already deposited my allowance for the next seven days. I am such a lucky geek.

So here came Adrian, inside a jeepney heading for a small meeting with Clarrisse and Almira at SM North McDonald's, and he packed his cybershot camera for documentation of his impulsive and ridiculous escapades.

My point of entry was Seattle’s Best Coffee. I withdrawn some cash from my cash flooded ATM card, and hurried my way towards the south entry of SM North, at Supermarkets. I considered myself a suitable shopper, so I act as if I belong to a high elite family lost inside The Block, looking for someone. Believe me; I should have given an Oscar for that performance.

Walking as if i was a socialite-asshole like Chuck Bass i walked my Chuck (redundant!) Taylor shoes towards McDonalds. As soon as I get there I saw familiar faces. What a treat! They were my old friends from high school.

In a sense I missed them badly, but I was driven into a thought that this is just another day for me, with responsibilities to fulfill, with goals to achieve, and money to waste. These people are as important as milk to honey; one could never separate the two from the other.

Ciao! God bless!

G: “I don’t know i guess between two teenage people, snuggling each other, hugging, kissing in public. Urrggg! I hate those stuffs.”

B: “Me too.”

G: “Exactly! You know what! From now on we swear to each other that we’d be singles for life.”

B: “I swear, my love.”

G: “Excuse me! What did you just called me?”

FOOD: PIZZA GALORE

There is a sense of warmth, a recoil from the degenerate pesto after being served two 2-in-1 delicious pizza. In an instant everything made sense for Keith.

Pepperoni + All Meat.

My plate, i just love the color play.

Can you find the bloody star?

A closer look at the star.

Bill is bull. But then, it's just enough!

After the treat we walk towards the street corner and surged into MiniStop Store. We ate some ice cream. Keith had a wonderful time.

How much is this 'heterosexual' to you?

Just checking?

A moment of a couple. (ES 11 ba toh?)

Banal expectations.

Keith amused himself by being alone in KNL (Krus na Ligas) Park.

FOOD: DISTURBING PESTO

Note: if you are a pesto lover, please skip this section.

In my attempt to entice my friends in accepting and appreciating the glory of 'the' pasta experience of Friuli, Gela, who also have the same idea in mind, and I ordered two PESTO servings.

Excited and hungry i played with toothpicks and drank a little Iced tea. The iced tea experience isn't that much great. I know that the trattoria (small Italian restaurant) is cutting some expenses so they served, as what I've theorized, a 3-in-1 Nestea Iced tea. It's as cheap as that, but i don't care if they served me powdered juice for like 60 pesos. That is not the most important thing here.

So the pesto arrived. I expected that the two, RJ and Keith, would be unsatisfied with the look of the pesto.
Keith, eating the toasted bun. Not so interested in pasta.

I still defended this pasta dish.

I do remember eating pesto for the first time. I always wanted to achieve something different. Remember my post on my nostalgic memories, i made mention there that i had dinner with my friends in Friuli when i was just first year college or seventeen year old.

it was also my first time to go there. We ordered four servings of Pasta and four servings of Pizza and some juice to go with everything. Pesto was served the fourth next to Carbonarra. By just simply looking at it, one could tell that green is not a good color for food. This psychological reaction is a noble trait for human beings. Most of us tolerate the red to yellow part of the visible spectrum as delicious food. The green to violet part would represent sweets like candies and bubblegum; vegetables and fruits.

The tolerance to green pasta is low and disengaging. Once a person sees a green pasta would judge instantly that it also tastes bad and vegetable like. However, during that first encounter with the Pesto, i was not disgusted but astonished by that a pasta can also come in green color. It was a new experience, an adventure, a new beginning. This fancy words may be too much with my pasta experience. But it was true, i thought of pesto that way. I usually like diversions from conventions.

Too bad, I got negative feed backs from my friends:

RJ: "Pasta should not be colored green."
Keith: "Honestly! I didn't enjoy it."

it is sad that most of us would always fall for the conventional look of food. but then, what could people like me do if such conventions have a much stronger sense to the audience's eye?

JOURNEY TOWARDS FRIULI!

The air seemed crisp from the rain last night.
The sun's heat is billowing on the side walks.
Blanks faces strolled towards the Shopping Center.
It seemed peaceful walking at Laurel Avenue.

Gela: "Hi there little girl!"

Krus na Ligas jeepney station!

ARRIVING AT FRIULI

We arrived at Friuli at about 1 o'clock in the afternoon, and the street is dead hot. The air is mixed with the peculiar air of urban life. Walking at Maginhawa St. seemed lonely. Nobody was around. But this melancholy was stripped from our consciousness after arriving at the scene.

Glorified by Friuli!

RJ and Gela - together, as usual.

Gela, the damsel.

Keith, the sexual predator! Rawrrrr.... Joke! (LOL)

Roger Junior, the other damsel.

Me, the _______.

What exactly are you expressing here RJ?

What makes a heart?

I could have started this post by asking about the truth of being happy but I've changed my mind. I thought that what i have learned from today is something about happiness but i was wrong. It was more of the heart.

There is a sense of direction, a view in bird's eye, the movement of my body today. it always moves forward, and forward, bumping to people, to things, to rocks, to events. Everything is just all mixed up. I remember waking up and saying a prayer: "God, i thank you for letting me be alive another day." From there my life kept moving forward. In a single day i almost experienced every possible emotion that one would feel: joy, sadness, hope, despair, sympathy, triumph, loss.

MASS AND FRIULI!

My day started with a holy mass at Holy Sacrifice Parish with Fr. Jboy Gonzales as our presiding priest. He made mention in his homily two important points: one about the significance of the Scriptures for that day, and the other one the importance of praying the Holy Rosary. He always do his homily in an 'academic' way, as what Melbert, a friend of mine used to say. Well, this is probably because of the audience he has that time. 1 o'clock mass is for starters in deep Catholic faith. I am positive that Fr. Jboy's efforts helped a lot of young men and women in achieving great purpose in life. This is not speaking from experience but also speaking from great stories from a friend's mouth.

Like what my close friend told me about his battle against a major twink in his life. The thoughts of being condemned by society is even greater than acceptance, or so i thought. Fr. Jboy brought light in this matter, and saved him from the darkest possibility of being ostracized ostensibly. The meaning of religion and faith and the fine line between them is increasingly thinner than before with Fr. Jboy.

Some of my other friends over-simplify him as a pop culture priest who lacks religious piousness and perfection. But then is it really important? what makes a priest? what makes his humanity? These questions are open-ended and often leads to undeniable judgment of character and unreal expectations.

So i give you pictures from the lovely chapel of Holy Sacrifice!

a friend whom i cherish through the years

It's been three years now
The winds of the past are painful.
Memories just makes you cry.

Of this beautiful girl
walking on the side walk
Mysteriously attractive
and meaningful.

My eyes, are they blinded?
to see such a beautiful girl
My heart beats fast
and she noticed me:
"Anung tingin tingin mo dyan?

And that was the beginning
of everything...

Film: On Criticism

Film: On Criticism
commentary on film criticism

I would love to have a movie date with Pauline Kael.

What a doug! Pauline and her bitch!

Guys, how much does it cost to have a date with a dead woman?

If there could be an advertisement: "Have a hot date with a blonde female film critic for $2.00 right now!" i couldn't think more of bringing her to a funeral of Sweeny Todd. She would love that, in fact she would defintely cry.

This is not a sexist comment on female film critics taking a stand on women's suffrage. (Gawd, i hate those times!) I prefer to call this as a commentary on dominant influence of this major film critic and her influence to the wave that the filmmaking industry is threading right now.

She is one that i'm seeking to study now, as i read Bernard Dick's book entitled: Anatomy of Film, i realize her importance as a film critic.

She has this daunting commentary that i was also concerned with, the role of a critic not as a passive-objective persona but an active-emotional distinction to the film.

A film critic is inevitable because it bridges the viewers and the artist. Without a critic, the orchestration of the deep relationship of the viewer and art is but a hole unfilled.

pauline Kael take this bridge as something spiritually engaging, and emotionally driven.

I, on the other hand, take this bridge as a fundamental link between my emotions and the art, but also objectively sharpened and amplified by the thoughts of thorough argumentation.

ciao!

UnFilmed: Friday Night at Philcoa
personal posts about a lesson of friendship

Growing up with my family taught me a big lesson of camaraderie and trust. When i was just a little boy, my father used to bring me out of the sea for an adventure. Our family, my father in particular is so fond of travel, and he would ought to travel wherever he wanted to and he would , most of the time, take me. So on our way to sea i was scared to step into the small, narrow pump boat. My father said, "Ayaw pakatakot nono." (Don't be afraid afraid son.)

From that moment on, i am not afraid of anything except God. On the second part of my life, i learned a similar lesson with friends. Never afraid to trust. Most especially the friends i met here in U.P.. Friendships varies at different stages of our lives. We might recall that a long time ago, friendship can be reduced into a single toy shared when playing with our childhood friends.

Later on, friendship can be simplified by the common stuff(like sports, books) we shared with our classmates at school.

It is succeeded by the stage where trust (secret-keeping) is as vital as friendship, this stage is more concerned with receiving-more-than-giving .

in our journey towards adulthood, we ventured further from these neutrality. We see ourselves in some paths uncommon and uncrossed by most of us. These paths can be so dark that we need people to hang on. On this transition, we cannot just reduced friendship into a single immobile things like a toy, instead we treat friendship as more of a giving, than receiving.

It is a charity. We give support and time to empathize with our friends, to listen and always to make them smile.

This is where everything starts: a beginning of a true and undying friendship. We might not realize now that these people that we met in this crossroad are those people who will be present in the most important part of our lives.

They are the principalities who will be present in our entire lives. We must understand that without them our lives are impossible to live.

And these are the people that i am talking about. Silly people!

Keith is always beside me (bading kasi! joke keith!)
