the Talented Gael Garcia Bernal

"The talent survives and remains while the beauty is diluted."

Last 77th Academy awards, a highlighted accent of the Uruguayan composer/singer Jorge Drexler won him Best Original Song when he sang Al otro lado del rio (On the Other Side of the River). The fate of his career as a song writer changed and also made history for being the first Uruguayan to won such high honor in the international arena.

The song has texture of Latin America and simplicity-driven musical tones than transverses with the warmheartedness of the lyrics. Music is one of the most abstract, most aesthetically driven form of art, and it conjures a powerful theme that conquers all kinds of emotions. everyone can sympathize with the sentimentality of music, but not all can make one, not just one, but a good one.

Jorge Dexler showed in this song that the fundamental significance of simplicity and warmness of tones can be universally acknowledged.

THE LYRICS

Rema, rema, rema-a Rema, rema, rema-a

Rema, rema, rema-a Rema, rema, rema-a

Clavo mi remo en el agua
Llevo tu remo en el mío
Creo que he visto una luz al otro lado del río

English Translation

I nail (or plunge) my oar in the water
I carry your oar in mine
I believe I have seen a light
On the other side of the river

The day will come when we will be able to conquer
Little by little, the cold
I believe I have seen a light
On the other side of the river

Above all, I believe that all is not lost
So many tears, So many tears
And I am an empty glass (or - vessel)

I hear a voice that calls to me,
almost as a sigh :
"Row, Row, Row!
Row, Row, Row!"

In this border of the world
Where we are imprisoned, are uncultivated,
I believe that I have seen a light
On the other side of the river

I, very serious, go rowing
Very deeply inside and I smile
I believe that I have seen a light
On the other side of the river

Above all, I believe that
all is not lost
So many tears, So many tears.. and I
am an empty glass (or vessel)

I hear a voice that calls to me,
almost as a sigh :
"Row, Row, Row!
Row, Row, Row!

I nail (plunge) my oar in the water
I carry your oar in mine
I believe I have seen a light
On the other side of the river

COMMENTARY ON GAEL GARCIA BERNAL

Gael Garcia Bernal as Zahara in Bad Education (2004)

In the advent of foreign indies for the decade, and also the awakening my interest in film-making, Gael's name just came up to me in BABEL(2006). No, i haven't watch the film yet but his name just came up in a trailer. That was the first time that i heard of him. Of course, University life kicks in, and what could you possibly expect here in the Univeristy of the Philippines thatn, purely, the definition of Art is at you bare hands. As an spectator, one of my friends showed me Y tu mama tambien (2001), and i saw a familiar face and it was him. I knew from that on that this actor is tallented, and will one day deserve an Oscar. Of course, I am currently working on my critic of him as an actor both on-stage and backstage. It makes a difference realy.

What appeared to me yesterday, on watching firsthand on DVD Bad Education (2004) was a different Bernal. The portrayal of multiple characters in one sitting is so consuming I almost wrote down numerous commentaries at random on piece of paper because the three portrayals were very unparalleled so i divided the paper into three parts. Bernal has this capacity to define a character with new vitality than usual, and also one key to this performance was also the competence of the director, Pedro Almodovar.

Bernal also directed and produced his first film Deficit which was premiered last year, 2007, on the 32nd Annual Toronto International Film Festival.
