ABOUT ME (Semi-Formal)

This is my "about me" page. Honestly, i hate pages like this. When I started blogging, this was the last thing that i have in mind. i find it idiosyncratic and selfish to write something about one's self-aggrandizement. It just doesn't make sense. However, i felt it was a necessary thing to do. So here it goes!

THE BASICS

Me, Myself and I

I am a college student from the University of the Philippines - Diliman taking BS Chemical Engineering. i took the course because i like it. But i like other things. I like things that can be studied. I like things that are spontaneous and whimsical.

I write. When i was twelve years old i wanted to be just like J.K. Rowling. When I was fifteen years old, i hated J.K. Rowling and dreamed of becoming James Joyce. A year later i wished i was Fyodor Doetoyevsky, the Russian novelist who write anti-hero stories. Two years later i wanted to become a Russian and live in St. Petersburg. Yesterday, I was nineteen and I wanted to become a film critic and live in Upper East Side, New York City. But today, after turning twenty, i just wanna become a film blogger with a Doctorate Degree on Petrochemical Engineering.

My friend said:

Adrian is like Chicharon—he’s special.

He is a sunshine that greets those dear to him with bursts of radiance that makes them feel good and special about themselves. Some people may come and go but not Adrian. Once you become his friend, expect him to be there for you always. He’s like a malignant cancer; you can’t just get rid of him that easy. He’s always there to make sure that his friends are in perfect condition—that no harm is upon them. His friends are very lucky to have him as a friend. The very fabrics of their existence would not be complete without that extra string called Adrian.

He’s the gin in a martini, the clams in a linguini—a friend to you and me.

- Keith Hernandez Cipriano

Aside from all that, I spend most of my college hours watching lots of films. What I mean by “a lot” is not a seventy (too few), nor a hundred (few), nor a thousand (moderate). Let’s just say I hit the 2,121th film last Sunday with Yi Yi: A One and Two (2000) by Edward Yang, and my 2,122th film last Thursday with a Filipino classic Tunay na Ina (1939) by Octavio Silos. I write criticisms about them and send it somewhere over the internet.

My all-time favorite film is Tokyo Story (1953) by Yasujiro Ozu because it is very close to my heart. My favorite film about love is Un Homme et Une Femme (or A Man and A Woman, 1966) by Claude Lelouch because I fell in love with it on my first viewing. My favorite national cinema is French cinema because it stayed with me through the years: from Lumiere to Vigo to Renoir to Truffaut to Godard to Lelouch to Rohmer and to Desplechin. Vive la France! My favorite local contemporary film that stayed with me is Raya Martin’s Now Showing (2008) and my favorite Filipino film of all-time is Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang (1974) by Lino Brocka.

But this is not who i am.

For someone who hates about page, it seems you let yourself go here. hahaha. It's all right, it's a fasc***ting read.

And priceless. Look at you now - an accomplished film reviewer. Who would have thought Linda Blair scared you that much as a child. The contrast between those two images - ah, priceless.
hello? anybody there? well, well, who would've thought that we'd spend until our fourth year in college without even meeting each other? wtf, i've a cousin in UP??? O.o hahaha

to be honest, i'd the chance to hear about you from others, i.e. former molave dormers, snhs graduates, people who seemed to be friends with you and who'd get curious about the surname that we apparently share (papa was only able to find ONE mendizabal who wasn't related to us in any way, the rest run along our blood lines O.o). the only thing that kept me from contacting you is this ridiculous filipino concept of HIYA...but now, i've since concluded that i've been pretending that i possess an inkling of such a concept all along, which brings me to my proposal: LET'S MEET UP! ^^

if at all you're not busy in this coming week, i suggest that you, my brother (dark, tall, and hadsome--hey, he's family! hekhek), and i meet up for coffee--since i assume that you are also dependent on this beverage as we are, but i'm still keeping my fingers and toes crossed because i was recently diagnosed with an illness that bars caffeine from my daily intake...those doctors, in their unintelligible writing, actually scribbled down my death sentence O.o well, we can just chat, y'know, perhaps trace through our family tree or even smoke some pot. however, considering that we have yet to graduate and that this is an appointment that i am shamelessly making online, i suggest that we go for the legal one: the former, however uneventful it may sound. oh well, we'll figure something out. ^^

anywho, just email me for your yes or no (yah better give me a YES, though!): warped4lyf@yahoo.com

ciao! ^^
rough films and story.....!

hey adrian,

I just wanna thank you for plugging my film blog on girish's website. I had lost all hope that anyone was reading my work, but maybe your recommendation will get me some traffic onto my blog.

Yes, I've been there
many times and I'm very much enthusiastic in pursuing my M.A. in Media
studies there in the future, right after i finish my double masters in
Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering at National University of
Singapore and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (NUS-MIT)
[http://web.mit.edu/sma/students/programmes/cpe.htm] two to three
years from now. I am actually fueling up for a career path in
Biomedical Engineering specifically on DRUG Delivery, mainly because I
want to help people with cancer.

I am currently acquainted with Joni Gutierrez, an associate professor
from your institute. We're corresponding for our website projects. We
hang out sometimes, booze and stuff. LOL!

Thanks for the heads up!

If you want us to meet, exchange movies, get drunk, talk about the
rise of Philippine Independent cinema, I can schedule it. I won't
bite, LOL! :)
